Spiro
Located just 25 miles west of Boulder, the CU Mountain Research Station is surrounded by breathtaking ridgelines and subalpine lakes. The MRS Station is an alpine branch of INSTAAR devoted to the study of mountain ecosystems and climate. Resting at over 9000 feet, Spiro offers prime solar gain and views.
Wind, solar and geothermal energy, all contribute to the Net-Zero energy goal. A rammed earth wall makes the backbone of the structure and is the main energy storage passive heating and cooling. The butterfly roof provides drainage and water collection with allowing for maximum daylighting and openness.

Mass wall is a critical part of regulating interior temperature, absorbing sunlight throughout the day and releasing heat at night. This works in tandem with the butterfly roof and PV panels, angled to give maximum light and heat in winter and full shade in summer. The roofline and building is split and shifted to give better exposure to light in the winter and integrating the greenhouse into the plan.
Primary circulation follows the main mass wall that divides the house. The private side of the program is behind this wall and raised 3 feet, making the space more intimate and exposing it to soft light in the morning, while shielding the main living space from evening sun.
