Mixed-Use Urban Infill

16th Street Mall

Denver, Colorado

Spectacle

Spectacle is a mixed-use cinema with lofts in Denver. The design focuses on filtering and diffusing light to create open and daylit spaces. Day lit open spaces are both achieved by strategically cutting large voids from the building mass, letting light spill into the courtyard and normally shaded units. Open social spaces provide for strong internal visual connections.

The open program elements give variation to these social spaces. The atrium is the main public gathering area, while in the residential the interior courtyard allows users to make use of the private open space. The upper levels are served by their own semi-public open air clubhouse terrace, allowing for natural ventilation in the residences above.

Spectacle separates the work/play programs from the living spaces above with large steel trusses, creating a sky plaza and clubhouse for residents. High density of features ensures a lively building that can be occupied and enjoyed at any time of day or night, enriching the street life. Large light wells expose the vertical circulation and invite visitors to explore multiple levels of the Spectacle. Large LED displays on the facade display movie times, events and images to the street.
